War, Peace, and Power:  Diplomatic History of Europe, 1500 – 2000

Fortnightly on Wednesdays
VenueAldinga Library, Central Way, Aldinga Beach
Time10:15 am to 11:30 am
The end of the 19th Century in Europe saw the unification of Italy and Germany. The latter was by far the most significant for those of us who remember the 20th for out of that came two cataclysmic world wars. It has always been a puzzle how irrational the German nations were. Why? Because Germany and Austria shrank in size as a result of their defeats. And a whole new map appeared showing the emergence of Poland, three Baltic states and a rash of new ones in the Balkans. We should also take special note of the rise of Greece and the demise of the Ottoman Empire, aka Türkiye.  Britain and France could not help themselves in 1917. They divided up Mesopotamia and the Arabian Peninsula without understanding what ancient peoples were there. These divisions have left an intractable problem that oil hungry US believes it can solve!  Also the world is faced with the never ending hostilities created by the state  of Israel. All its neighbours believe that it doesn’t belong there. Its existence is a continuing affront to its neighbours. And sadly Its behaviour does it no favours.
