History of India: The Europeans Discover India

Fortnightly on Wednesdays
VenueCommunity Room at the Aldinga Library, Central Way, Aldinga Beach
Time10:15am to 11:30 am
This term we will have our attention focussed on the consequences of Vasco da Gama’s rounding of the Cape of Good Hope and the discovery of the east coast of the Indian sub-continent. His return fired a Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French and English competitive rush to exploit the riches of the East to satisfy the awakened greed of their national backers. The most successful were the English and their East India Company. This lives in Indian memory as the rape of their land in spite of all the benefits that came to the sub-continent as a result of British technology (railways and telegraph) and administration (civil service and judiciary).

Taught by Professor Michael H. Fisher of Oberlin College.
